Waendel International Walking Festival delivers!

Great advert for Wellingborough today as our group successfully completed the 15km distance walk at the Waendel International Walking Festival today. Well done to everyone.

The walk took us along canals, former gravel pits, nature reserves and villages which are hidden from the main roads with some lovely scenery. I hope the pictures below do it justice.

And the weather delivered too! Much warmer and sunnier than had been forecast.

I was really bowled over by the size of this event. There were hundreds who lined the walks. The website doesn’t do it justice. It was so great to see our European neighbours here in force to participate. We met people from Belgium, Holland, Australia and Germany. It really is an International event.

And good too to bump into fellow nordic walkers from Wellingborough and Northampton led by Helen and Bernie. We never miss a photo opportunity!

And now for the stats! The course was actually longer than 15k. On our various devices we registered it at somewhere north of 10 miles. - I think Simon clocked in at 10.7 in total.

Hope you enjoy the 3D walk through below.

Honestly, if you have nothing on tomorrow and fancy a walk out, you won’t regret it. The festival runs until tomorrow evening.

Foraging Course with Wild Adventures

Special Event - Nordic + a Forage

Every time we go out we are witnessing the change in the Seasons and learning about the nature we are immersed in.

And this includes learning more about how we can live off the land.  This month we are privileged to have an edible flower demonstration at Kathy Brown’s Gardens. In June, we will take this a step further with a special FANW event ‘Nordic + a Forage’ in conjunction with Simon Birbeck of Wild Adventures. Simon is an ecologist, bushcraft and survival specialist with a deep interest and background in ecology, biology and environmental science with a passion for wild flowers and how our ancestors foraged for medicines and food.  He is a Master Herbalist in Phytotherapy.

Places are limited. However, if there is a lot of interest we may be able to run a second afternoon session. This will be a quite unique event! If you’d like your children to come along, please give me a ring first to discuss.

Event details:  We will be nordic walking, foraging and eating what we have harvested on route.  Simon will share his expertise and enthusiasm which is infectious.  There will be a rather special finale at a secret location around a camp fire with special snacks and cordials to complement what we have picked up on the way.

Date: Saturday 15 June 2019

Time: 9am start - the event will run for the whole of the morning.

Meeting point:  White Lane Track, off Dungee Road, heading out of Harrold towards Podington

Price:  £40 per person in advance (deadline for booking is 10 days before). This fee includes the nordic walking session.

FANW at Kathy Brown’s Gardens - Friday 17 May (Nordic Walk @12.30 / Event @2pm)

We are really fortunate to be have the opportunity to attend an Edible Flower Demonstration at the wonderful Manor Gardens, Stevington, hosted by Kathy Brown.  This is a lovely way to spend a Friday afternoon.  A real treat in the best of English country gardens.

This is open to all FANW walkers and their friends who are welcome to join us for the Demonstration.  Please see booking options at the end of this message.

For those who may not be familiar, Kathy Brown is a renowned gardener and cookery writer, with a beautiful home and gardens in Stevington.  Anyone who hasn’t been before really is missing out.

The garden is 4.5acres with many different areas to enjoy. Kathy has told me that it should be a glorious time in the garden with the herbaceous borders, cottage garden, containers, edible flower border etc.  The clematis should also be lovely also the early Chinese roses and fingers crossed the laburnum and allium walk should be starting to look wonderful. Maybe a few tree peonies and intersectional peonies too! I love May!

The afternoon will include an Edible Flower Demonstration and, if the weather is fine / with no wind, there will be a chance to crystallise paint some petals.  Additionally, there will be time to have a wander around and explore the gardens.  There is also a gift shop where Kathy sells her garden cards and recipe cards, china mugs, gardening and painting books. Just a quick note: there are no credit card facilities so you will need to bring cash or cheque.

Refreshments will be provided: tea on the lawn with choice of cakes all with petals. You will also be offered homemade apple juice or elderflower cordial and a choice of tea or coffee. This might be in the dining room/conservatory if weather is inclement). If requested, there will be gluten free (or other dietary) alternatives.  Please let me know in good time in advance if you have any such dietary requirements and I can pass these on.

PLAN FOR THE DAY:

For those who can make it, we will have a Nordic Walk starting in Stevington, at 12.30, to finish by 1.45pm.

The cost for the Nordic Walk + Event is £24.50 payable in advance.  To book into the Nordic Walk and the Kathy Brown event please book in HERE .

If you would like to attend the Kathy Brown event at 2pm but cannot make the walk the cost is £17.50 and you can book for the event only HERE

DIRECTIONS: By car, Come into Stevington turn by the old Red Lion Pub, down Church Road for about 350 yards, then turn left into the Manor House drive. There is plenty of parking in the field to the left of the main drive (signs will be out). The toilets are next to the car park. Please gather and meet in front of the conservatory at the front of the house.

This will be a great event.  I hope to see you as many of you as possible.  Check out the slideshow below!

Great Fun and Fitness had on the Christmas Nordic Walk

Great atmosphere and spirit yesterday on yet another memorable walk in our local countryside. We covered just over 9 miles taking in pub pit stops at the Cock, Bell and finally the Fox. Thanks to Alison for putting on a spread which was well earned.

The walk marked some firsts. In particular the ‘bag for life’ wellies to get us through a swampy bit of the walk down by the River Great Ouse out the back of Pavenham.

Here are a few pictures from the day including some courtesy of Jenny Goodman! And thanks to Diana for the map pic!

Check our the routes and stats below too.

New Year, New Resolutions. Choose Nordic Walking

New Year, New Resolutions. Choose Nordic Walking

Choose Nordic Walking as part your ‘Get Fit and Healthy’ commitment for 2019. This is why.

It combines the simplicity and accessibility of walking with simultaneous core and upper body conditioning similar to Nordic skiing. The result is a full body workout, which means that you:

  • burn up to 46% more calories compared to walking without poles;

  • release tension in the neck and shoulders;

  • improve your posture and gait;

  • strengthen your back and abdominal muscles; and

  • reduce the impact on your joints.

And because Nordic Walking doesn’t feel like too much hard work you’ll be happy to walk further and for longer.

Its benefits have also been endorsed by Public Health England.

I will be running a series of Learn2Nordic Workshops starting in January. The first one starts Friday 4th January and will run over 4 consecutive weeks. You can book in using the booking form below.

Even if this course doesn’t fit in with your plans, but you would like to join a group, please do drop me a line at hello@freshairnordicwalking.com.

Look forward to seeing you soon!

Better than staying on the couch!

Just under a 5 miler nordic walk this morning. Well worth getting out of bed early even if, as Claire said, the weather felt more ‘Nordic’ than we’re used to!

Walk and a SoupFest

Walk and a SoupFest

There’s a great event in Bedford this coming Tuesday (27th November, 11.30am) called SoupFest, to raise money for the homeless. Details of the event can be found HERE.

For everyone who may be interested, I am planning this Tuesday morning’s regular nordic walk to take in a walk from Riverside in town along the riverbanks of the Great Ouse and then back for the start of SoupFest. Who doesn’t love some hot soup in these wintry months, especially for a good cause?! Can’t wait. To reserve your place please click here.

Sociable Fitness Works!

On Thursday evening, our intrepid Nordic Walkers braved the wet and cold to take their strides to the urban environment of Bedford town centre and join the festive mood as the Christmas lights were switched on.

Starting from the top of Brickhill we walked down towards the Embankment to watch the fireworks and take in a mulled wine and soup at The Longholme Cafe. As they say, for every down there is an up and off we went heading back into town, through Bedford Park (we did look like a group of Minions scooting across with our head torches) and back up the hill to our starting point. Over 7km nordic miles under our belt by the end. But most of all we had a right laugh. Good memories.

Pushing it Further on a Saturday Morning

We like to try and extend our walks on Saturday mornings. This week we completed a 12.4km nordic walk touching on three villages - Carlton, Turvey and Stevington, basking in beautiful Autumnal sunshine all the way - it almost felt like Summer was back again.

It was so atmospheric as we walked along the old railway line near Picts Hill

Nordic Walking Exel Challenge Photostory

INWA 10 Steps technique showcased by Team FreshAir at the Exel British Nordic Walking challenge.

I couldn't be more proud of our group.  It was our first group event and we went straight for the 10k.  The picnic in the stunning grounds of Wollaton Hall Deer Park was a perfect way to finish off a great event.  It was so good to catch up with the Nordic Family - especially Catherine Hughes, Bradley Blake, Rebecca and the rest of the BNW team.

Here's my photo story of the day.  I hope this encourages more and more to attend these events - roll on Newport on 24th June 2018!

Beautiful Bedfordshire - right on our doorstep

What a stunning weekend!

Lovely walking today.  Great 8km trail (13k steps) and video analysis out the back of  Pavenham with the Saturday Early Crew (well, most of the regulars!).  It's been more than a year out with the group and whether it's been snowing, sleeting, raining cats and dogs, dark, sludgy, muddy, or sunny, they've made the time each Saturday to get out there, regularly and with a smile.   These sessions sum up why I do this.

Have a lovely Bank Holiday Weekend everyone.

New Faces New Goals

Spring 2018

It's been great to see so much enthusiasm from everyone, including our 10 Nordic Newbies who started in January, in spite of our waterlogged paths and muddy fields. I can't wait for things to improve weatherwise just a little so that we can explore all the great routes that are on our doorstep,

For some who are keen to set some personal goals, I am delighted to help you achieve them. To help this along, I am extending Saturday morning sunrise walks for the devoted 7.30am gang to try and get us up to 10k distances regularly. Same for the Friday morning workout gang :-)

Save the Date

Saturday 28th April. First 5 and 10k Nordic challenge  And then i will be running a stall on The Green at Harrold Pit Run in the afternoon. Details to follow.

British Nordic Walking run a series of Challenges throughout the Summer. First one is in Nottingham Saturday 12th May. At the beautiful Wollaton Park in Nottingham We really enjoyed last year's event.  It would make a perfect day trip for all the family especially if we organised an afternoon picnic.  Everyone's a medal winner.
